Partly, this is because it was the president’s signature issue, and most Democrats who went down to defeat had themselves at one time echoed the many falsehoods the president made on its behalf: Premiums would go down, it would become more popular over time, you could keep your doctor, the individual mandate wasn’t a tax, etc. In this election, ObamaCare served as a convenient shorthand for arrogance and overreach. When it came down to it, the advocates of “Smart Government” couldn’t even produce a functioning Web page. Much as the mainstream press has tried to diminish the role of ObamaCare in these midterm elections, the president had it right: It was his policies on the ballot. And they’ve now given the GOP the Senate.
