Pat Benatar - Promises In The Dark From her third album Precious Time, released in July 1981. The album hit number 1 for one week on the Billboard 200. Written by Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo, the song Promises in the Dark reached number 38 on the U.S. Pop chart and number 16 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. Pat Benatar wrote this song with her guitarist and future husband Neil Giraldo on a plane during a tour. Pat Benatar was still shy about her lyrics so instead of singing them to Neil Giraldo, she slipped them under his door in the middle of the night. The song deals with trials and tribulations of past relationships and how they affect the one youre in now. Havent we all had to tend the emotional scars left behind from whoever got there first? In the case of Benatar and Giraldo, things worked out quite well: they got married in a cow pasture in Maui in 1982 and have been married ever since. They have continued their musical partnership as well, with Giraldo producing all of Benatars next albums. Hinting at the personal nature of this song, Pat Benatar told Songwriter Connection magazine in 1984: Sometimes I really hate singing in the first person. It is so personal sometimes. I do mostly observational lyric but if its directly from something that happened. I cant stand to sing it in first person.
