Patience is one of the greatest virtues, which Islam encourages, and through its active practice, instills in us. Our scholars teach us that patience has three basic facets: patiently implementing the commandments of Allah despite the difficulty that might bring; patiently avoiding the things Allah has prohibited despite the difficulty that might occasion; and patiently maintaining our composure, dignity and religion in the face of calamities despite the difficulty that might involve. Life is not a cruise down the River of Life on the Good Ship Lollipop. It is a struggle with Id/Ego, Satan, the world, and enduring the challenges presented by the vagaries of time. With patience, we will work through those struggles and come to experience the sweetness of faith.
