Paul Muldoon has been called the greatest poet of the last half of the twentieth century.That makes him a tempting target. This poem uses a devilishly difficult format where the second line of one stanza becomes the first line of the following stanza. Spoiler alert: Muldoon cheats and I dont. THE MOUNTAIN IS HOLDING OUT The mountain is holding out for news from the sea and the raid on the redoubt. The plain won’t level with me for news from the sea is harder and harder to find. The plain won’t level with me now it’s non-aligned and harder and harder to find. The forest won’t fill me in now it, too, is non-aligned and its patience wearing thin. The forest won’t fill me in nor the lake confess to its patience wearing thin. I’d no more try to second guess why the lake would confess to its regard for its own sheen, no more try to second guess why the river won’t come clean on its regard for its own sheen than why you and I’ve faced off across a ditch. For the river not coming clean is only one of the issues on which you and I’ve faced off across a ditch and the raid on the redoubt only one of the issues on which the mountain is holding out. (Paul Muldoon) THE POT IS CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK The pot is calling the kettle black. It may or may not be true. The kettle answers the pot right back, Im not as black as you. It may or may not be true. Its difficult to say. If the kettle decided to sue, the pot might win the day Its difficult to say whos black and who is not. You cant get DNA from a kettle or a pot. Whos black and who is not? We will never know. The kettle hates the pot. Alas, ‘twas always so. We will never know who started the attack. Back and forth they go! The pot is calling the kettle black. Winner of a Pushcart and nominated three times for a Dumptruck Prize, Mr./Ms. Blue is the recipient of many prestigious grants and awards. She co-edits the Ectopic Review and is published by Entropy House. The fact that her name is an anagram of Pablo Neruda - and Adorable Pun - is purely coincidental.
