Peak Performance Pointer #2: When dealing with disappointment – watch your reaction! Sometimes life is unfair and we don’t always get what we think we want. It might be a job we apply for, a promotion we aimed for, a partner we were attracted to - we all face challenges and obstacles in all areas of life at different times. How we react to these “disappointments” and resolve them or move forward, determines a significant part of our happiness, resilience and confidence to grow and keep moving. The next time you face a disappointment, pay attention to how you react: - Do you get stuck? Left feeling hopeless and miserable. - Do you blame yourself or put yourself down. - Do you blame other people Its their fault. They should have... - Do you instantly think its because youre unlucky and leave it to chance? These kinds of reactions are unproductive and will leave you feeling worse with no way to move forwards. Instead, stop and use this as an opportunity to ask yourself and remind yourself “What do I really want?” For example, if you didn’t get the promotion you applied for, did you want the new job for: • new challenges and stimulation • increased pay • just because you’re unhappy in your current job Once you know this, then you can ask, “What’s the solution to this?” You’d be amazed at how many alternatives open up when you are problem-solving and proactive, accountable for your life. And there is certainly more than just one way to meet each of your needs. You may learn new things about yourself and therefore disappointment isn’t an invitation to quit or give-up, but rather a chance to reevaluate and look at your other options. You may even discover new directions or steps required to take towards a new path. This is much more useful and effective than staying stuck and miserable. It’s easy to get caught up in reacting to events as a passive victim when they appear. Today, let’s try judge some of our disappointments as opportunities to lead us in the direction we really want to go and have a little faith in that everything happens for the best. andisaitowitz
