Peggy ( Margaret) Bulmer of Seaton Carew was also known as Appleby. She was born in 1793 and died in 1870, smoking a pipe and with a telescope under her arm this photograph was taken about 1853 by James Edward Backhouse who was a photographer and had a home in Hartlepool on the town wall. She always wore a mans coat and smoked a cutty pipe. In her youth she had spent many years at sea as a man before the mast. When the old cannon was fired for a wedding in about 1839 she had lit the fuse!!
