Penalise those who misuse parking lots for the disabled THE state - TopicsExpress

Penalise those who misuse parking lots for the disabled THE state government and the relevant authorities should do more to improve facilities for the disabled, said the Society of Disabled Persons Penang (SDPP). Its president Teh Lay Kuan called on them not to neglect the needs of the disabled community. She said one of the many issues and complaints the society received was regarding parking for the disabled. “More often than not, these special privileged parking spaces locat- ed around the state for disabled drivers are used by able-bodied drivers even though there are clear signages,” said Teh during the SDPP’s annual Mooncake Festival Party at Goh Kongsi in George Town, Penang, recently. She said the SDPP appealed to the relevant authorities to enforce the law without fear or favour to those who committed such an offence and to penalise them. She also noted that the same scenario was happening at certain shopping centres and supermarkets. Teh added that the lack of availability of ramps at public facilities such as banks was also an issue for the disabled community. “Disabled persons face a lot of hindrance in doing their transactions or paying bills at such premises,” she said. “We hope to bring this issue to the attention of all as there are still many people who do not respect or understand the needs of the disabled.” Earlier, more than 100 invited guests from various charitable bodies turned up for the Mooncake Festival party where they were all feted with local delicacies. Children were not left out as they gleefully played with the lanterns given to them at the party.
