People already think Im crazy, theres no question about that.. but most folks think I am certifiably insane when I tell them I want to own a radio station one day. That dream of mine is no secret to most anyone whos known me for awhile. And some recent conversations with some of my close radio friends who currently own or have owned radio stations have further fueled this fire inside of me. Call me crazy, but I want to own a radio station in the worst way. Yeah, I know some of those folk who have owned or currently own stations will tell me its not worth it and theres alot of government regulation, costs/fees, headaches and other crap that make it a pain in the ass to own a station. .but you know what? Ive wanted to be in radio ever since I was a kid.. and from about high school on, I felt that owning a radio station was part of that calling. I dont care if its AM or FM. I dont care if its a small signal or big signal. I dont even care what part of the country the station is in..as long as its in a nice small town. I dont want to be wondering when Im 80 years old What if... I had bought that station. So what if I fail in 2 or 3 years, then I can at least say I tried. And you know what, Id damn well try again a 2nd and probably a 3rd time. I believe in the power of radio and I truly truly believe live, local, community radio can make a difference in the listening area. Sure, some folks will say, youll get tired of it after awhile and throw it up on the satelitte. NO! I wont.. live, local and community focused it why I got into this business.. and thats what makes it fun for me, even if it means a 12 or 14 hour work day when I am working for myself. I know how to make local radio happen!! Most people who know me at length personally and/or professionally will tell you there isnt a person more passionate, dedicated and driven to radio then me. Theres a big sense of satisfaction I get out of being a part of a listeners life. That being said, I KNOW I can succeed.. WHY? First of all.. I want to BAD. And when you want something bad enough and work for it, it will eventually come to fruition. Secondly, I know if I had a good support staff.. sales, engineering and other on air folks.. I could make a go of it and have a successful station. I know I still have lots to learn about the sales and radio side of the business.. but when it comes to LOCAL RADIO and community oriented, I GET IT. I can put myself in the shoes of a listener and figure out what they like and why they listen. Will I own a radio station in the next month or next year? No but I sure hope itll happen in the next 5 or 10 years. The right situation will eventually present itself. I am certain once I got my hands on a radio station I was the owner of I could make it a station the community would be PROUD to call their own and have in town. I know how to make local radio happen!! You wanna know the only thing really stopping me? Money! I dont have a ton of it...hardly any actually. .anyone thats whats kept me back..I need to put together a down payment and some money for operating expenses/capital upgrades. I am not perfect and will make mistakes from time to time.. but I love radio.. always have and always will.
