Pete Seeger dead, but oh what a life. Songs crafted from the struggles of the US that seemed to emerge from the beauty of the landscape and the everyday magnificence of those who strive. I was lucky enough to witness Seeger leading the crowds at Obama’s first inauguration concert. I was an interloper; this land was not my land, though it has my heart as much as any cultural space, but the hope was palpable and I willed, like most everyone there, that hope to feed Obama and his co-workers, to help make this land an open, fair place for everyone. I choose to refuse skepticism. I still think I was right to do so, despite that hope long gone, for it fed other hopes, and I was warmed to hear of Seeger on the Wall Street Occupy marches. An activist to the end – what other way is there to live? Pete Seeger, I will sing with you today in gratitude, and hope. Deep in my heart, I still try to believe . . . youtube/watch?v=nkNxkIoG254
