Petunia, last week’s cranial cruciate repair patient, came in - TopicsExpress

Petunia, last week’s cranial cruciate repair patient, came in yesterday to have her Fentanyl patch removed. Pictured here is Petunia in her natural “ebullient” state. She is already walking better than before her knee operation. We find our patients’ recovery following major orthopedic surgeries is much more rapid than it was fifteen years ago. A major reason for this rapid response is preemptive pain management performed before surgery. Long lasting, local anesthetics are used to desensitize the sciatic and femoral nerves, as well as injected into the knee joint itself. Narcotics are used epidurally, intravenously and transdermally (Fentanyl patch). By halting the transmission of pain impulses before, during and immediately after surgery, the nerves, spinal cord and brain do not become sensitized to pain. The patient feels better and walks better after surgery...It also doesn’t hurt that Dr. Holzer has done over 60 similar procedures.
