Phonics instruction teaches our youngest students the most - TopicsExpress

Phonics instruction teaches our youngest students the most important and regular relationships between letters and sounds, to enable them to tackle new words. Since the English language has many more sounds than letters, and multiple ways of spelling many sounds, our teachers must carefully guide students through the complexities and irregularities that surround each new letter-sound relationship. When we stopped by Lincoln-Thomson Elementary this week, Mrs. Mitchell’s kindergarten class was working with their letter of the week – the vowel “o - and focusing on its most common short o sound. Vowel letters are especially challenging for students to master, since most American English dialects contain 15 to 20 distinct vowel sounds. Click on the video below to watch Mrs. Mitchells students brainstorm about words starting with the letter o - it may be easy to write, but its sounds are all o-ver the place!
