Photograph of the old Guardian Angel Day Nursery building that once stood on the six corners intersection of West 46th, South Laflin and McDowell (formerly Gross) Streets, circa 1965. Building was built in 1915. Just a few door down from the university settlement house. The large, brick roof line visible to the left, rear of photograph was part of the old University of Chicagos Settlement House building founded by Mary McDowell in 1894, and operated as a kindergarten and nursery school in the early twentieth century for the children of working parents who lived in its New City neighborhood. According to the book: Polish Immigrants and Industrial Chicago: Workers on the South Side, 1880-1922 book, by Dominic A. Pacyga: The corner where Guardian Angel stood had long been given the neighborhood nickname of Whiskey Point. Before the arrival of the Polish settlement, saloons occupied each of the six corners created by the crossroads of Gross Avenue and 46th and Laflin streets. Photograph by Sigmund Ostry, circa 1965. View is looking west.
