Piedmont Board Of Education members decline salary for the 15th straight year Board of Education members here voted Tuesday to give up their salaries to support Piedmont’s schools. Each member is eligible to receive up to $600 per month, according to state law. Superintendent Matt Akin said the maximum amount that all five members of the Piedmont board would be eligible to receive is $36,000 per year, money that will stay in an account used to pay for general expenses. “It’s just a service that we provide for the community,” said Shannon Ray about his work on the school board. “It’s not about the money.” The decision was not an unusual one for the Piedmont board to make — it’s made that contribution every year for the past 15 years. Jacksonville City School Board members make a similar contribution to schools there. Angela Morgan, who represents teachers in Calhoun, Cleburne and surrounding counties for the Alabama Education Association, commended the Piedmont board’s decision. “Do they deserve a salary? Absolutely,” Morgan said. “A lot of people don’t realize that board members do a lot.” Also on Tuesday the board elected member Michael Ingram to serve a year as the board president, and it tapped member Lin Latta to serve as the vice president. In addition, Ray, who was recently reappointed to the school board by the Piedmont City Council, was sworn in to serve a second term. In other business, the board: — Approved a plan to issue debit cards to teachers for use in purchasing classroom supplies. Each card will be loaded with $300. — Approved a budget amendment for fiscal year 2014. The board’s general fund ending balance changed to $805,000 from $713,000. Akin attributed the increase to grant money the system received during the school year.
