Pink Stem Borer Attack on Wheat crop: Now a days there has been a severe & wide spread attack of Wheat –PSB. Hope you will find this post as useful in identification and Management of this somewhat new nuisance of wheat crop ( it is in 4 parts). Acknowledgement: My special appreciation to all my field commandos for being with me doing hard work in this freezing cold weather … Thumbs up dear guys Tariq, Naveed, Sajid, Ashfaq, Ramzan, Younus, Manzoor and a lot of farm hands … because it has never been an easy task for them to work with a hard (or a mad person, as they may think so … ;) ha ha. Part –1) Identification & Isolation of Caterpillars: The caterpillars are pinkish in colour without any stripes. A fully grown caterpillar is cylindrical with its head red-brown in colour and measures 20-25 mm in length. The larva is pinkish in colour with a reddish brown stout head and tough & sharp mandibles. You will find these larvae in the bottom of wheat seedling stem, near or below soil level. Control of Pink Stem Borer on Wheat crop : The following chemistries have shown significant results against Wheat-PSB in my field experimentation You can use any one of them depending upon, soil moisture conditions, crop status and ease of convenience. 1) Broadcast CURAN® 3G @ 8 Kg per acre in already wet field, as mostly is case, now a days. Better to mix CURAN broadcast with Urea … OR 2) Foliar spray RIGNIL® 5 SC @ 480 ml per acre … OR 3) Flooding with RIGNIL® 5 SC @ 480 ml per acre … OR 4) Broadcast RIGNIL® 0.4G @ 6 Kg per acre in already wet field, as mostly is case, now a days …OR 5) Foliar spray STARFEN® 10 EC @ 480 ml per acre.
