We envisioned them as new hybrid biomaterials for solar energy harnessing, self-repairing materials [and] chemical detectors of pollutants, pesticides, [and] fungal and bacterial infections.” Im not sure that superpowered photosynthesis (and these other touted - but still very hypothetical - advantages) would be worth the cost in an exovivarium: an environment polluted with carbon nanotubes, which have proven quite toxic in other contexts. Like genetic modification, this is a development to watch, both for its promise and for its perils.
