Please join ETSU students, staff, and faculty, for a Walk of Hope on Wednesday, 9-10-14. Well begin walking at 5:00pm at Borchuck Plaza (in front of Sherrod Library) and proceed to Founders Park (across from Tupelo Honey Cafe). We will commemorate those lost to suicide, share in stories of survivors, and talk to everyone about the need to eliminate stigma associated with common human struggles such as depression, anxiety, substance dependence and other afflictions, the need to reach out to people who are suffering, the need to talk directly with people at risk of suicide, and the need for increased treatment options to help people with all manner of psychological and physical maladies. Descartes was wrong...there is no mind-body dualism. We are one with ourselves, and physical and mental intertwine intimately. The system weve set up which holds that physical problems are real and to which everyone responds with compassion, but where mental problems are something to be looked down upon as a weakness or inferiority, has old roots, which need to be acknowledged and eliminated. Whether or not you join us tomorrow, please think about all the people in your life who might be suffering silently, for fear that they might be judged harshly by the very people who love them most. And, break that silence by reaching out with love, understanding, and assistance.
