Please, no radical replies like all horses should be barefoot or all horses should be shod, ok? :) To all the professional farriers - I need advice. How does a client ask her farrier to not pare out the sole of every horse but to just take back the toe to keep the frog in the correct position and maintain hoof length. All of my horses are very sore after every trimming. 2 wear shoes, two do not. One of the mares has to be shod with keg shoes now after being barefoot for 3 years. After X-rays revealed that two of my mares had less than 7 mm of sole and overall hoof length was less than 3 we had to shoe the previously barefoot mare and put Heartbar shoes with wedge pads on the other one. Vice been trying to tell my farrier to leave more overall length on all my horses and questioned why he pares away so much of their soles. Vim an experienced horsewoman, a judge and a trainer. I know what needs to be done. In my area its difficult to find ANY farrier, not to mention finding a good one. My farrier comes from 2 hrs away, is ALWAYS on time, has a great way with horses - perfect in every way except the above. Help or advice is welcome. Thanks so much.
