Poem #2: MY HEART IS A GRENADE My heart is a grenade. The pins been in it over long. Ive borne it on a bandolier, Where it’s been held, Against my breast. It rises with each beat of heart and breath, And where, I do confess, It’s been for far too long, Unblown. I sit beside this road of love, Where I have marched along, And wondered when, Or even if The road ends up somewhere. Time and time again, Eyes closed, I’ve heard the couples pass, Around the bend and o’er the hill …Till only stillness stays. The wood is near. It stands behind me, morn and eve. Besides the beating Of my heart, it is the only friend I have. The sun, the dust, Which both might be the friends of me Have now so long Become my enemies. Alone I sit, Alone I stand, alone I fret, Awaiting for The woman who might get me yet. With bated breath, Ive stood beside the road, for her to come, And sighed inside, At those whove come and gone, Releasing them When theyve not blown my soul grenade. I do apologize For all flirtations sent or made, For when I’ve waved them all goodbye, Then settled back Upon my roadside rock. Theyve all been oh, so nice, Still not enough To set my soul astir... …Alone I sit, Alone I stand, Alone I fret. . . Copyright © 2010 Steve Garcia
