Police chiefs probed over drug deals Kampala. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kale Kayihura has ordered for the investigation into allegations that two police bosses at the Kabalagala Police Station in Kampala are conniving with drug dealers. Gen Kayihura ordered for the probe of division police commander Francis Chemusto and the officer in-charge of criminal investigations, Mr Herbert Kikomeko on Monday. The drug dealings are said to take place in Muyenga, Kabalagala, Kansanga, Mbuya and Luzira, all Kampala suburbs. According to Gen Kayihura, the police officers at Kabalagala and its divisional posts have been covering up drug deals as well as tampering with exhibits. “It is a disciplinary procedure. The two are being investigated by the [police] Professional Standards Unit and if found to have anything to do with the allegations, action will be taken. If found innocent they will be cleared, but they had to move aside for investigations,” Gen Kayihura said. A police source told the Daily Monitor that the internal investigations was as a result of a complaint filed by a suspect alleging that heroin confiscated from him was not the same as what the police were keeping as exhibits. “The report shows that the police have been killing cases against suspected drug dealers and sometimes they change the drug exhibit. Like if it is heroin, they replace it with chalk and sell it,” Gen Kayihura said. Kabalagala area has on various incidents been mentioned in connection with drug abuse. Following the death of Butaleja Woman Member of Parliament Cerinah Nebanda, who was alleged to have died after reportedly taking a drug overdose, police arrested two suspected drug dealers from Muyenga Tank Hill. In July, a 24-year-old resident of Kikubamutwe in Kabalagala was arrested by police after allegedly being found in possession of fake US dollars, 10 SIM cards and unidentified chemicals suspected to be heroin. In another development, officers yesterday recovered a police gun which is believed to have been used in many of the violent attacks in eastern Kampala. The gun, registration number UG POLICE 240810, was found with a one Ojom, an alleged criminal, who is currently in police custody. Police are investigating the matter as part of wider investigations on the use of legally registered guns in violent crimes. “It may be one of the guns that have been hijacked from our policemen that were killed, but we are yet to check into the police records to ascertain,” the IGP said.
