Politics makes for strange bedfellows. And so does fracking… Environmental activists are trying to stop fracking in America, even though it’s led to both a US energy-production boom and cleaner air, as cheap natural gas replaces coal. But the anti-fracking brigades just picked up a powerful ally: oil-rich Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. In an open letter to the Saudi government, the Prince lamented that demand for OPEC oil is “in continuous decline” because of fracking producing rising energy from shale in the US. He said Saudis are worried that 92 percent of their economy comes from oil, and they need to diversify. I don’t know how environmental activists are going to react to hearing that their latest ally against fracking is a Saudi oil billionaire. But I do know that for most Americans, if OPEC nations are panicking about the flow of our dollars being cut off, well, that’s not a bug in fracking.
