Post-Doctoral Research Fellow - Physics, Engineering, and Biology : Seattle, WA, United States The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center fhcrc.org/ is a premier research institute located in Seattle, WA. A quantitative biology laboratory in the Division of Basic Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious postdoctoral fellow who has a strong background in experimental physics, experimental chemistry, or engineering and now desires to study complex biological systems. The candidate must have a strong background in mathematical modeling and computer simulations. We are interested in using experimental biology, quantitative measurements, and mathematical modeling to examine fundamental questions in the ecology and evolution of microbial communities. For example, how might different microbial species interact with each other in a community to allow the community to carry out a function that would have otherwise been impossible? How might the presence of interacting partners influence the evolutionary trajectories of microbes? How might community structure – the relative spatial positioning of cells within a community – influence community function? Our laboratory culture is diverse and cooperative. Each lab member has an intimate knowledge of and contributes intellectually to each others project. More information about the group may be found at honeycomb.fhcrc.org. Designing and performing experiments, building and maintaining instruments, writing computer programs to do simulations and to automate data acquisition, and constructing mathematical models. PhD in physics, engineering, or chemistry. Besides the ability to think creatively and critically and the desire to learn biology, the applicant ideally should have lab experience that includes designing and performing experiments, building and maintaining instruments, writing computer programs to do simulations and to automate data acquisition, and constructing mathematical models. This is an ideal opportunity for an imaginative and driven individual who seeks intellectual challenges at the interface of multiple disciplines.
