Posted on Society for Conservation Biologys Africa Section List group: 57TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AFRICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION November 20-23, 2014 JW Marriott Indianapolis Hotel, Indianapolis, Indiana Deadline to Receive Proposals: March 15th, 2014 ___________________________________________ The 57th Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association offers a unique opportunity for scholars across diverse fields to critically examine the locations of violence in Africa’s past, present and future, and the creative responses to these forms and sites of violence, including new opportunities for reconstruction. The organizers of this panel for the African Studies Association annual meeting are looking for one or two additional papers. Panel Description/: Addressing the multiple forces shaping conservation and tourism policies, this panel aims to address the multiple forms of violence in which conservation and tourism are implicated -- the commercialized hunting and killing of wildlife, the structural violence of conservation-linked dispossession, and conflicts arising from neoliberal concessionary nature tourism. Those who live in high biodiversity areas are most vulnerable to outside threats such as extractive industries or even at times, inappropriate conservation practices. The introduction of ‘community-based conservation’ worked as a key mechanism for accumulation by dispossession allowing conservation a foothold in village lands. This foothold produced the conditions under which subsequent dispossessions could take place. Since the livelihoods, health, cultural survival and overall well-being of indigenous people depend directly on the services nature provides (i.e. clean water, food), and ability access to their lands and resources, organizations involved in conservation have a duty and obligation to understand and address potential negative impacts of conservation of the people whose rights and livelihoods may be affected. If you would like to join this panel, please e-mail us at [email protected] and [email protected].
