Prayer Focus DAY 9: 1834 WILLIAM GARRISON & TIMOTHY WELD: LANE TO OBERLIN BELIEVING FOR FREEDOM “If the church united against slavery, within three years, there would not be a shackled slave or a cruel slaveholder in our country.” — Charles Finney Have you ever wanted to defend those who are being picked on or bullied? Proverbs 23:10–11 says, “For [the] Defender [of defenseless orphans] is strong and He Himself will bring their charges against you.” God’s Spirit stirs our hearts to speak out and protect the people around us. William Garrison, editor of the Liberator newspaper, and Timothy Weld, a respected theologian, were abolitionists (activists against slavery) in a time when the idea of freeing slaves was controversial. But Garrison and Weld took a stand for what they believed in. After a heated public debate about slavery, nearly all the students involved left Lane College and transferred to a school that admitted African Americans—Oberlin College. This decision influenced universities all over the nation to begin to admit African-American students. Your actions to defend others around you will influence the world to follow what God is doing. Justice and revival go hand in hand. PRAYER: Jesus, help me to take a stand against today’s “slavery.” Lead me to defend those who are bullied and to stand against racism of any kind. Change my heart to see the gold in all people, especially people I have difficulty believing in. AMEN. FOOD FAST DAY 9: WATER ONLY Today during the time when you would normally be preparing and eating food, sit down and draw a self-portrait. While drawing, declare the things you love about yourself. Point out the ways God made you unique. Every time you think about food today, declare the things you love about yourself instead. ACTION POINT FOCUS: SCHOOL STAFF Write a card for a professor you appreciate. Be encouraging and honor them for all they do as a teacher. TODAY’S VERSES: Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Genesis 1:27: “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
