President Goodluck Jonathan was denied the right of declaring for a second term yesterday because of the failure of the military to release the abducted girls from the captivity of Boko Haram terrorists. The Presidency was said to have decided that the president would declare interest in a second term, in his national broadcast to commemorate Democracy Day, but the continued detention of over 200 students of Government Secondary School forced him to reschedule the declaration till another date.“The plan was that President Goodluck Jonathan would make known his interest to seek a second term mandate from the people during today’s (Thursday) broadcast to the nation to mark the Democracy Day. But the idea was shelved for technical reasons which are not unconnected with the abduction of the continued abduction of the innocent chibok girls,” a Presidency source disclosed. “Everything that was supposed to be in that broadcast speech was there except the declaration for the second term and, again, Mr President made a tacit reference to this in the speech. The argument is that doing so now could give our opposition opponents as is self servingly and selfishly usual, another opportunity to attack President Jonathan.“As observed by the information minister, Labaran Maku, it is an irony that the same APC whose states are selfservingly giving taking nigeria 20 steps backwards with this insane insurgency, is the same party that always makes disparaging statements against the government. But once the problem of the abducted girls is over, Mr President would still make his interest known.”The president listed the achievements of his government in his address to the nation, but he admitted that the abduction of the students has robbed his government of its achievements. He spared no word to condemn the insurgents. Watch out for more drama to try to prevent the inevitable. Bombs, abductions or no, the presido will definitely declare.
