President Uhuru Kenyatta has given Athletics Kenya (AK) the green-light to bid for the hosting of a world sports event in the country. The President called on AK to bring home either the world youth or world junior athletics championships, promising them of his government’s full support. “In deed, our manifesto concerns firm pledges on improving and expanding sports infrastructure to increase our capacity to accommodate athletes and athletics events,” said the President. AK president Isaiah Kiplagat said the President Uhuru’s challenge could not have come at a better time and will be making the country’s intentions known when he attends the IAAF Council meeting in Moscow next week. “ I hope to get full details on whether we will host the world youth or world junior during the IAAF Council meeting next week in Moscow,” he said. . The President was speaking yesterday at State House Nairobi when he hosted the Kenya Rugby Sevens team and national athletics team to the World athletics Championships in Moscow. The president lauded the Sevens and 15s teams—observing that they made the country proud especially with the Sevens team fourth place finish at the Rugby World Cup held in Moscow in June. The 15s won the continental title. “The Sevens team made us proud in Moscow and I am convinced were it not for the rain, they would have brought that cup home,” said the President. “Ending up fourth in the world is no mean feat. We will continue to support you so that success may continue into the future.” The President also said the national Government will fully support County governments to develop sporting facilities within their jurisdiction to accelerate the growth of sports at grass-root level. During the function, Kiplagat announced the appointment of Strathmore sports director and Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) director, Isaac Mwangi as the first AK chief executive officer (CEO).
