Presumptious Sin TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 6:1-11 KEY VERSE: “And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God” (2 Samuel 6:6,7). To fear God is to reverence Him, to be led and guided by His Spirit in absolute obedience to His word. Godliness therefore is to live a life of absolute surrender to His will with a continual consciousness of the Holy Spirit’s abiding presence. Such consciousness must be the type that will envelope us with a feeling of profound awe, respect and honour towards Him. The Philistines had been defeated roundly in two wars and the liberated Jerusalem was now to serve both as political and religious centre for David’s new kingdom. It was proper then for the ark which was at Kirjath-Jearim to be brought to Jerusalem as agreed by the leadership of Israel. The law stipulated that the ark should be carried by the sons of Kohath. Touching it with bare hands was certainly off limits. It is pleasantly rewarding to do God’s work. Such work must however be done reverently, not in accordance with the dictates of mere exuberance and enthusiasm. God’s anger was directed against both David for placing the ark on a cart and Uzzar for touching it with his hands. As David sought to bring Israel back into relationship with God, he had to be firmly reminded that enthusiasm in the service of God must be matched with decorum and strict obedience to scriptural demands. Our desire to serve God in the local churches or in His vineyard generally must be moderated by a sincere and honest disposition and in strict obedience to His word. Regardless of any emergency, we must approach God’s service with due reverence, honour and respect. Where our enthusiasm leads to the lowering of God’s standard, such will not be accepted. Serve God as a measure of your gratitude to Him; but serve Him on His terms only, in holiness and righteousness. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Familiarity breeds contempt.
