Prime Minister Hailemariam meets the AU High Level Panel on Egypt Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn met and conferred with the African Union High-Level Panel for Egypt on Tuesday (August 13) and discussed the Panels’s activities. The Prime Minister said the restoration of peace in Egypt means a lot to Ethiopia and other countries in the region and Ethiopia would provide the necessary support to the AU High-Level Panel for Egypt with a view to help that country resolve its crisis. As the current AU Chair, Ethiopia will continue to support all efforts being undertaken to restore peace in Egypt, he added. The leader of the Panel, former President Alpha Oumar Konare of Mali underlined the commitment of members of the Panel to continue to discharge their responsibility given by the AU. The Panel provided a progress report to the AU Peace and Security Council meeting on Wednesday. It visited Egypt from July 27 – August 4 to meet various political actors and assess the prevailing situation in Egypt. The Panel is made up of former President Alpha Oumar Konare of Mali, former President Festus Mogae of Botswana and former Prime Minister Dileita Mohamed Dileita of Djibouti. Meanwhile, Ambassador Dina Mufti, Spokesperson of Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday (August 14) underlined Ethiopia’s hopes for calm and engagement in dialogue to ease the escalating violence. “Egypt is a big nation and the peoples are wise, Egyptian political actors and citizens need to resolve their differences peacefully and through a dialogue,” he said.
