Proceed in a Dignified Manner Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When the Iqamah is pronounced, do not come to it running. Rather, you should walk calmly with tranquility to join the congregation. Then pray what you catch and complete what you miss.” [Sahih Bukhari] The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “For when one of you is walking to the Salat (prayer), he is actually engaged in Salat.” [Sahih Muslim] This hadith tells us not to run or walk hurriedly in order to join a congregational prayer because this is undignified whereas we are commanded to be self-composed and dignified with regard to all matters. Secondly, when a Muslim walks to a Masjid after performing ablution at home, he is considered to be in a state of Salat. Thus, he is already earning the reward for the Salat. Pushing, shoving, and squeezing in between people are not a part of the prayer and so a Muslim should not hope to be rewarded if he is doing these. Thirdly, the first Rakah he prays behind the Imam will be counted as his first Rakah, so he must make up for the Rakahs he missed, if any, after the Imam has concluded his Salat.
