Professor Adam Grzeliński is going to run the seminar Main Issues of Modern Philosophy in our Program Invitation to Philosophy and Sociology. Professor Grzelinskis main field of interest is early modern philosophy (especially British) and aesthetics (modern and contemporary). He published mainly on the history of British empiricism and the aesthetics of the period, particularly on Shaftesbury, Berkeley and Hume (“English Debate on Beauty. Aesthetic Theories of Shaftesbury and Burke”, 2001; “’Subject’ and ‘object’ in David Hume’s Science of Human Nature”, 2005; “The Man and the Infinite Spirit. The Immaterialism of George Berkeley”, 2010). Recently professor Grzeliński has been doing a research focusing on the relationships between natural philosophy, empirical investigations and the philosophy of science in the 17th century. He has also been working on a monograph on the philosophy of John Locke. Recognizing the importance of the translations of classical philosophical texts, Professor Grzeliński invites his students, colleagues, and friends to this collective intellectual adventure. As a result of the collaboration and of his own work, several volumes of translations have been published so far: G. Berkeley’s “An Essay towards a New Theory of Vision and Other Philosophical Works” and “Siris”, W. James’ “Essays in Radical Empiricism”, Shaftesbury’s “A Letter Concerning Enthusiasm. The Moralists”. Some of the writings by P. Bayle and G. Santayana should also be available for Polish readership soon. As the director of the Institute of Philosophy at NCU Prof. Grzeliński has less time for his other passions, such as travelling or reading, but when he finds time to see more or less remote places, he prefers looking around from the height of his bicycle’s saddle. When not in the institute, he can be met in Yoknapatawpha County and in the streets of Los Angeles where he wanders around with Philip Marlowe.
