Proffitt Races to National Medal Danny Proffitt was in action for West Suffolk Swimming Club in multiple pool races and the Open Water event at the recent National Youth Championships in Sheffield to race against the best swimmers the country has to offer. On the first day of the competition, those that had qualified and were tough enough to battle the elements, raced it out in the gruelling 3k Open Water competition which was held at Rother Valley Park just outside Sheffield. Danny (18), who favours these events and has had a successful open water campaign leading into this race was ready to fire on all cylinders. After a fast start to the first buoy, Danny held a comfortable lead for the first 1800m of the race. The second placed swimmer from Scotland, took over the lead with 1200m to go, making it difficult for Danny to find a way past him in the closing stages. After a battle in the final 100m of the 3000m race, Danny was just touched out for the gold medal, taking silver just over 2 seconds behind the winner. Danny was the first Englishman back, over 20 seconds ahead of the third placed finisher. A great start to the week. On day 2, Danny was back in action in the pool after an ice bath and recovery swim following his open water medal-winning swim. It was a tough morning race in the boys 15-18yrs 400m Freestyle event, where Danny swam to a new best time and qualified for the 17-18yrs final which would take place later that evening. In the final, Danny finished 10th, down on his morning swim and still feeling the 3k swim in his body from the previous day! The 200m Freestyle was up next, where Danny swam just outside his best time and missed the semi-final by only 0.1 of a second, to finish as second reserve. With no other swimmers pulling out of the semi-finals, Danny finished the day being ranked 13th in the country for the 200 free in the 18yrs age group. On the penultimate day of the competition, Danny finished off his week in Sheffield with a sprint compared to the rest of his weeks’ events in the 100m Backstroke. Just falling off the pace in the last half of the race, Danny swam to within 0.1 of his personal best time (pb) to finish 19th in the UK for that event. Well done to Danny on his success and he will now be looking forward to a 3 week break with no 5am starts until the new season gets underway at the end of August.
