Prologue: “Their heartbeats… I can hear them all…” In the first days of Japonica, the landscape was considerably stranger and sparser than it is now. Rocks were forming and reshaping and growing and falling. The plant life was only in its first stages of life, reaching out towards the sensational suns, beckoning towards the shining stars. They reached upwards and celebrated life thusly, euphoric in their existence. The creatures that reside upon the land at this time are, at the moment, few and far between. Upon the tallest precipices stand the largest creatures, looming down upon the land and calling in a cacophonous caterwaul upon the denizens of the deep plains. Then there were the creator Demigods. These were creatures who were assigned the task of maintaining and manufacturing the landscape. Some were Lords of the Grasses and the Hills, others were assigned even the mountains. But they also acted as sentinels, watching over the world. They ensured that it remained peaceful and safe. Crying out in reverie of the sacred suns and the monumental moon. Some smaller creatures traipse over the land below. These creatures are small and bird like with only a splash of colour upon their backs. However, much taller than them are the indigenous creatures of the age. They are at least eight foot tall and are biologically heavily armoured. They seek simple joys and are rewarded with them in return. However, in these first days, the very first waking winks of the planet, the Gods are not so tolerant. Paranoia pervades the plains and the pestilence of potential peril perseveres. The planet and the world worries. But there is, behind the veil of solace and silence, a far greater evil stirring in the midst. From within a dark and dank cave, two voices could be heard. “Please, please, I’m the last of my kind! I do not pretend to comprehend the quarrel that you seem to have with me and the rest of my species bu-” Begged the first voice. “Be silent. I cannot be assuaged. Your vocalisations are highly unnecessary. The ritual shall begin.” Announced the second voice in a tone that suggested an incontrovertible determination. “Their heartbeats… I can hear them all…” The only sound that was palpable thereafter was the screaming of the Demigod. Then the night fell and the sounds of the Hill Giants filled the air, drowning it out for good until all that remained were the stars and the moon.
