Protect Nutritionists and Health Food stores in Michigan: Please pick several of this list of talking points for your letter that reflect the concerns of your organization. We encourage you to add additional points in your organization’s voice in stating your organization’s support for HB 4688. See the letter suggestion at the bottom. The existing MI Dietetics and Nutrition Practice Act needs to be repealed because it: • Dramatically and immediately reduces the supply of those allowed to provide individualized nutrition counseling • Creates immediate job loss by making it illegal for those previously allowed to provide qualified, individualized nutrition counseling • Is law tailored to the benefit of members of one private professional association – the Registered Dietitians® -- to the exclusion of the much broader profession • Is not based on a body of qualified evidence of significant and discernible harm, and other remedies exist for those who feel they have been harmed. • Threatens public health by capturing many activities designed to positively change: nutrition-related behavior, health risk factors or health status for individuals, groups and the community • Uses licensure criteria developed by the national and state dietitian’s private association, and patterned after Dietetics training. • Eliminates the right of consumers to seek out complementary and integrative care from providers that match their values and beliefs • Blocks nutrition practice by a range of qualified health care professionals with a nutrition specialty and prohibits many from integrating nutrition into patient care • Allows licensure of Bachelor level dietitians while effectively excluding licensure of Master and Doctoral level nutritionists. • Reflects only one perspective and approach to nutrition—that taught in Dietetics programs. There is an increasingly large evidence base for other approaches to nutrition care. • Current law threatens innovation. Many excellent alternative education and training opportunities exist in both 4-year colleges and universities, and in the private sector. • Employment of dietitians and nutritionists is expected to increase 20 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor & Statistics. The current licensure law would unnecessarily restrict growth in this sector.
