Board of Education, a ruling that segregation was illegal; this event marked the start of the Civil Rights Movement of 1963. Yesterday, June 26, 2013, history was made again, when the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and deemed it unconstitutional. As a man of a strong Christian faith, we are taught to love, care and protect our brothers and our sisters from ALL walks of life. I stand with the Supreme Court and their decision, and I stand by the oath I took when I entered the Florida House of Representatives, to ‘serve all men and women!’ Regardless of your political beliefs, your religion, or your color, we should define ourselves as a nation on the basic principles of freedom and liberty. The rights of the LGBT community adds significant meaning to those principles we hold so dear, the pursuit of happiness and equality in the eyes of the law. No matter your opinion on the issue, we are facing reality and another movement is underway.
