Proud of the CoeurdAlene peoples!! I still remember the 100th anniversary of Statehood which was really what the indigenous peoples called the 100th anniversary of survival at the Boise State Fairgrounds -- turned into a beautiful encampment of several 100s of Idahos First Nations including the CoeurdAlene. The emcee was from the tribe, a proud man, strong voice named Henry SiJohn. On the last night of the four day event, Ill never forget, the state of Idaho threatened to shut off the electricity. Guess they werent going to accommodate a different sense of time. We went on anyway! Mr. SiJohn told us to yell so loud that the Governor could hear it. Ive never FELT such a YELL before than Idaho Indian tribes in one place yelling out their war cry! Goosebumps -- much less, this high pitched yell tore out of my throat like very surreal. I remember my friend turning to me, wide-eyed, saying was that you? At the very end all the dancers lined up to dance out. The emcee said he and some other veterans had left the day before and come back and they brought with them what looked like a helmet of a Conquistador, and a sword which they had taken in battle in the old wars. The emcee led the long line of tribes, carrying these captured artifacts, veterans and dancers undefeated and proud as they circled the arena four times. Who needs electricity. It was incredible!! So yeah, Im not surprised that the Coeur dAlene, strong-hearted people took this stand against the megaloads. Warriors do not need a wasteful and endless supply of extracted energy.
