Psalm 40:5 Many, O Lord, are Thy wonderful works which Thou hast done, and Thy thoughts which are to usward; they cannot be reckoned up in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. Savour is the taste or smell of something. To savour is to impart flavor or scent; to season; to appreciate fully, enjoy or relish; to excite or interest by its power. God wants us to savour the things of the Bible, for they have a distinctive quality. The Word of God will season us and impart flavor and scent to us. We must give ourselves to the enjoyment of the Things of God. That means we must bask in the Scriptures, feast on them and devour them because we avidly appreciate them. Let’s taste and see how good and gracious the Word is for that’s when it will season and spice up our human nature. (Psalm 34:8; Proverbs 24:13) Believers are called to be the “salt of the earth but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? Antiseptic salt symbolizes durability, fidelity and purity. When we don’t savour the things of God, we lose our sweet-smelling savour, and become as a “stink” to others. But when we present our bodies as a living sacrifice—holy and acceptable unto God—we will walk in faith, purity and love. Our Father wants us to make the Things of God “Top Priority.” Things are defined as “objects we can’t name specifically—actions, thoughts, activities, utterances, matters, qualities, requirements and interests. If we’ve been focused on our interests, God is calling us to make His requirements, interests and utterances top priority. When we ask Him what’s on His heart, He will share those “things” and matters that concern Him, yet keeping His “secret things” to himself. (Deuteronomy 29:29) Then we’ll say as David: “Many, O Lord, are Thy wonderful works which Thou hast done, and Thy thoughts which are to usward; they cannot be reckoned up in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” Let yourself savour Him when you’re sick and see if He won’t strengthen you upon your bed of languishing. (Psalm 41:1-3) He will hear and give you your heart’s desire, when you savour His Word more than your necessary food. Jesus assigns peace to us even as we encounter tribulation, but we must continue to savour the things of God more than our own things. That’s the secret to great joy and spirituality. The test of obedience brings believers into the arena of tribulation, but faithfulness to Jesus assures victory. Jesus overcame the world, and we’re joint heirs of Jesus; therefore He’s great within us if we allow Him. All this takes place if we refuse to let anyone or anything separate us from savouring the things of God.
