Psalm 84:5-7, Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, whose heart is set on pilgrimage. 6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a spring; the rain also covers it with pools. 7 They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion. Back to Psalm 84 again--there is so much there to contemplate! This passage metaphorically describes the life source of the believer. It is vital first to understand that Baca means dryness. We spend our life traveling through a Valley of Dryness (VOD)--that is the nature of this life even at its best and happiest compared to Gods Kingdom. And yet, even in the VOD there is spiritual refreshment, made even sweeter by the parched environment. Water in Scripture, you will remember, is a type of the Holy Spirit. So where does water come from in the VOD? Verse 6 tells us the dual sources of spiritual refreshment. The first source believers carry with us, inside of us, and all that is needed is to tap into and release it. This is the spring of Psalm 84--the river of living water of John 7:38. Just as Moses was told to speak to the Rock in the Wilderness and water would come forth (Numbers 20:8), We speak to the Rock that is Higher than I and He yields His refreshment for our spirit. The second source are those pools of blessing that God rains on us; the rain pools and forms an oasis where we rest and gain strength. Notice, however, that we are not intended to remain in residence in any particular oasis--such is the nature of a heart set on pilgrimage. We rest and gather strength by the pool, but then are called to return to the journey through the VOD. Here is our confidence and our faith: that our Father knows that of which we have need, and even as we turn our backs to the pleasant pool of refreshment and face the sands of the desert, we know that He has prepared our next resting place long before we have need of it.
