Public Service UPDATE US 51, Old Hwy 70 to 3rd Avenue, towns of Minocqua and Woodruff (From the D.O.T.) Roadway construction update (We are getting these reports more often now as current construction finishes up and the Holiday weekend approaches) US 51 is limited to one lane in each direction through the project, with turn lanes at US 51/WIS 70 and US 51/County J. Crews completed removing pavement and adding new gravel to the inside lanes. Crews finished pouring the center concrete curb and gutter medians. Weather permitting, they plan to fine grade the inside lanes today (June 27), and pave the first two layers of asphalt on the inside lanes today (June 27) and tomorrow (June 28). Crews continued electrical conduit and concrete base installation for the new traffic signals at the US 51/WIS 70 intersection. Electrical conduit, concrete base, and new traffic signal placement will continue, concurrent with grading and paving operations. Permanent traffic signals at the US 51/WIS 70 intersection are expected to be operational the week of June 30. Concrete sidewalk work is nearly completed to County J. Asphalt driveway work is scheduled for completion prior to July 3. Utility (gas, electric, telephone, and cable) relocation work by Wisconsin Public Service, Frontier Communications, and Charter Communications continues. WPS anticipates that the new street lighting will be operational by June 28. Traffic impacts Motorists on US 51 can expect to encounter one lane in each direction and flagging operations until noon on July 3, 2014. The lane reductions, combined with the increased holiday traffic is likely to result in traffic backups and delays. Motorists traveling through this area are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel. ***Crews currently plan to open US 51 to four lanes by noon on Thursday, July 3. Work and lane restrictions on US 51 will resume after Labor Day.**** Crews will continue to work on the local and county systems in the Minocqua/Woodruff area throughout July and August. Motorists may encounter traffic impacts on County J, Townline Road and Packing Plant Road. Crews plan to continue to work nights and weekends.
