Published on Jun 30, 2014: On Sunday, the Israeli premier said that Tel Aviv supports the separation of the Kurdistan region from Iraq, adding that Iraqi Kurds deserve independence. Benjamin Netanyahus comments come nearly two weeks after Kurdish Peshmerga forces entered the northern city of Kirkuk. They arrived in the contested city after Iraqi forces withdrew in the face of advancing ISIL militants. The president of Kurdistan Regional Government Masoud Barzani has already made it clear that Kurdish troops will not retreat from the oil-rich city. But facing fierce criticism from Iraqi Sunni and Shia politicians, he later suggested that the fate of Kirkuk be determined through a referendum attended by ethnic groups in the city.
