Published on Nov 19, 2014 Thank you for watching. Please note: This video is not about comfort or enabling, while it is witty, it is unflinching. It is an example of privilege to take it personally when people of color discuss political experiences of white supremacy as a system. Now, a description: Over one weekend in August, three political education camps for South Asian American diasporic youth took place across the United States. These camps were: East Coast Solidarity Summer in New York City (ECSS), Chicago Desi Youth Rising (CDYR), and Bay Area Solidarity Summer in the San Francisco Bay Area (BASS). Roopa Singh, founder of SAAPYA, an emerging platform for critical race perspectives on yoga and diaspora in America, was an organizer and facilitator on arts and activism at ECSS 2014. Roopa presented on South Asian comics, and asked the youth to create compelling, comedic narratives based on any experiences with exotification, using yoga and spirituality as a lens, or not. She then filmed the youth, as they related their stories. This film is a collage of the youth’s narratives. It is a compelling, astute, unflinching look at what it is truly like to be young, desi, and American, right now.
