Q&A with ‘The Paw Man’ (614) – My Train Of Thought Melissa Raines hi i just found your page and just wondering if you can answer a couple of questions please i have two dogs there staffy crosses (very bits of everything) we have alot of problems with them. Firstly we have styx he is now 3 years old and tends to jump at my face and tries to nip im not sure ifs a playfull thing or not but he dose it when hes excited or your paying attention to our our other dog, he also when we take them to the beach loves water and will swim for ever but the second he follows me out he tries jumping on me and its really quite scary as he dose not stop it results in my boyfriend having to come and pull him away beacuse he wont listen to me in the water so i can leave the water and im covered in scratches from his paws and if there other dogs around he dose not listen to either of us. then we have lilly she is 2 who is styxs sister from the litter after his she was the runt and we got her when she was just about 6weeks old as she wasnt gaing weight and the mum stopped feeding her she was tiny. shes not big on being patted but loves to fetch and run around shes really agile and has a massive spring in her legs despite her size now she wees a little bit when you try and patt her when shes excited and if you tell her off which is common she ate our bathroom cabnet she dosnt come when shes called eighty percent of the time and when you call her styx comes to i have spent litterally hours trying to train them but it all goes out the window when there are other dogs around despite there habbits i adore them and spend as much time with them as i can i hate the fact that i cant take them to the beach any more and let them have some off leash time late at night or in the early hours of the morning do you have any ideas in how to curb these habbits and get them listening? any help would be fantastic. Paw Man I suspect the answer to your question is that these dogs just need some formalised training, not casual at home training. But in case I’m on the wrong track here are some questions; 1. What formal training have any of your dogs had? 2. What informal (at home training) have they had? 3. What experience have you had in training dogs? 4. How do you normally discipline your dog’s when they do something wrong? 5. When you walk these dogs on leash, what piece of equipment is the leash attached to on the dog? (Collar, Choke Chain, Halti, Harness etc) After I have seen the answers to those questions I should be able to give you some more specific advice.
