Q. I am concerned about all the stories I have read about all the bugs and illnesses that are going around at this time of the year, and how to get help if I am ill if my GP is closed or busy over the Christmas period. What is the best advice? A. Health services are urging people to care for themselves over winter when possible to ensure that NHS services remain available to those who really do need to access them. If a person really does need to see their GP or visit hospital then they should do so, but there are some basic things that people can do to help themselves and avoid unnecessary use of services. The NHS are asking people to make better use of the 111 telephone service and local pharmacist services which can often offer advice and basic medicines to help treat the most common minor ailments and winter illnesses. Stocking up your medicine cabinet with treatments and ensuring you have enough prescription medication in stock, also means you do not need to venture out when unwell or if the weather turns bad. You can also access nhs.uk for advice and information, a symptom checker and information about local services
