Q: Was the Book of Mormon necessary for guiding the first century - TopicsExpress

Q: Was the Book of Mormon necessary for guiding the first century church? A: No. It wasnt even completed yet at that point anyway, but even if it was, the first century church was still in touch with God and still believed in continuing revelation, as evidenced by the fact that they were still writing the Bible. While they didnt require this specific book, they did require continuing revelation. The first century church did both require and receive continuing revelation to remain in touch with God, and the loss of this led the church to fall into apostasy and caused the Dark Ages. Much as I admire C. S. Lewis, the fact that the Dark Ages were dark has to be acknowledged. Q: Is the Book of Mormon necessary for guiding the church today? A: Definitely. There are at least a hundred thousand mutually contradictory interpretations of the Bible alone, where the addition of the Book of Mormon narrows the field to about a dozen major ones at the absolute most. Q: Is the Bible and the Book of Mormon and other Latter Day Saint revelations sufficient for guiding the church today? A: No. No book or set of books is ever sufficient. Such a natural sufficiency is unreachable, like an asymptote. Direct interaction with the Holy Spirit is required, not just through books, and continuing revelation where more scripture is always possible is required. Otherwise, youre putting God in a box.
