Qualifications Required For ESL Teachers ESL or English as a second language is the learning of English by non-native speakers. Immigrants entering an English-speaking country make up the student pool. Many different courses are offered whether it’s teaching English for business purposes, for academic purposes or to develop communication skills. The teachers imparting the education are required to be properly qualified as most students are beginners with barely any understanding of the language. A master’s degree in teaching English to non-native speakers is a must whether they work in community colleges, private schools or universities. TESOL is an umbrella term which stands for Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages. It consists of different training courses to give tutors the necessary skill and qualification to teach English to non-native speakers. The courses may be short-term and spanning only a few months or may be doctoral programs. K-12 teachers, i.e., teachers qualified to teach primary and secondary education can also be TESOL-certified. Qualifications may differ from state to state so most have a specialization in ESL (English as a second language). A range of exams at either or both state and national levels including a Praxis test must be completed before teachers are deemed qualified to teach ESL. Prior experience also helps but an academic certificate or degree is a requirement.
