Question: ------------ What is the ruling if a Muslim celebrates CHRISTMAS, or carries out an action which honours the occasion? Answer: ----------- To answer this question, the following principles will be applied for Christmas: It is stated in Jami al-Asghar: When one gifts to another Muslim on the Day of Nayrouz (a day celebrated by the Coptic Orthodox Church) - with no intention of honouring the day (rather it is a habit of some sort) - this man will not commit kufr. It is necessary that he does not do this, especially on such a day. He should either do this before (i.e. the season) or after, so that it does not resemble the actions of that nation. Verily the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stated: He who makes a similarity with a nation, is from that nation. It is also stated in the same book: A man bought on the Day of Nayrouz something which the non-Muslims buy, and he never used to buy this before. If he intends honouring this day - as the polytheists do - he has disbelieved. Imam Abu Hafs Kabir stated: If indeed a 50 year old man named Abdullah gifted to some non believers an egg of the Day of Nayrouz, with the intention of honouring the day, indeed he has fallen into disbelief and his deeds have been destroyed. The same is stated in al-Bahr ur-Raiq. Wajid Iqbal (Servant of the righteous) Team Essential Islam IHYA AS-SUNNAH | REVIVING SUNNAH
