R&E was at the National Cathedral last night, January 15, for a free concert called “The Spirit in Flight.” All the thousands of chairs had been removed from the cathedral’s nave, and attendees were able to listen to the music while standing, sitting, or roaming through the emptiness. Listen here to a brief excerpt from the motet “O Bone Jesu” by Robert Carver, a 16th-century Scottish monk and composer, sung by Cathedra and conducted by Michael McCarthy, the cathedral’s director of music.
