R. Harold Spalding (May 17, 1943 - July 30, 2014) R. Harold Spalding MONROE CITY, Mo. – R. Harold Spalding, 71, of Monroe City, died Wednesday (July 30, 2014) in his home surrounded by family. Born May 17, 1943 in Hannibal, Mo., he was the son of Gerald David and Myrtle Gertrude Hays Spalding of Indian Creek. He married Janie Scott Conway January 20, 1964 in Monroe City. She survives. Mr. Spalding was a graduate of St. Stephen High School. After graduation from high school, he worked for Monroe City Diecasting Company, Bleigh Construction, and began working at Diemakers Incorporated in 1963. After leaving Diemakers in 1985 he was instrumental in forming Indian Creek Development Corporation, which built Indian Creek Marina on Mark Twain Lake. During his retirement years he farmed acreage in Marion, Ralls and Monroe counties. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and St. Stephen Knights of Columbus. Mr. Spalding never was one to seek recognition but was continuously and silently supporting others and his community. He shared his love of music as a member of Monroe City Singers. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Janie Spalding, a son James Thomas Spalding and his wife Jill of Monroe City, three daughters; Stacie Hagan and her husband Jim of Atlanta, Ga., Suzanne Quigley and her husband Jeff of Monroe City, and Sarah Kendrick and her husband Pat of Monroe City. Thirteen grandchildren, Megan Moss and her husband Jeremy, Lindsay Spalding, Lance Hagan, Whitney Hagan, Serenity Quigley, JayCee Quigley, Donnie Quigley, Miranda Minor, Lizzie Minor, Clara Minor, Ashley Hays and Caitlin Kendrick; and five great-grandchildren, Ryan and Ethan Moss, Mya Martin, Shannon and Morgan Hagan; 3 brothers, Albert Spalding and wife Jan; Matthew Spalding and wife Peggy, Daniel Spalding and wife Marsha all of Monroe City; five sisters, Geraldine McNally; Dorothy Kern; Patricia Shoemaker and husband Bob; Cecilia Spalding; and Barbara Quinn and husband Tim all of Monroe City; one brother-in-law Don Holcomb of Fulton, Ms.; and one sister-in-law Sandra Spalding of Jefferson City. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sarah (Sally) Holcomb and three brothers George Spalding, David A. (Tony) Spalding and Lawrence Joseph Spalding; one sister-in-law Eva Jo Spalding; two brothers-in-law Bill Kern and John H. McNally. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 2nd at Holy Rosary Church by Fr. Michael Penn. Burial will be at St. Stephen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at Garner Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Mark McNally, Gary Shoemaker, Michael Holcomb, Trey Mudd, Gerry Quinn, Dennis Spalding, Jeff Spalding, and Cary Spalding. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Holy Rosary School Building Fund.
