R-rated Comedy Movie Quote/Trivia of the Day 1) Cal - I hired a 90-lb girl to work in the stock room at Smart Tech for you, okay? I shouldve hired a 300-lb guy to lift the 60-inch flat screen, but instead I hired a hot girl who cant lift an iPod to bring you out of your funk. 2) David - Hey, Paula. Paula - Yeah? David - I gotta tell you something. Im really excited about it. Uh, for the first time today, I woke up, I came to the store, and I feel confident to say to you that if you dont take this Michael McDonald DVD that youve been playing for two years straight off, Im going to kill everyone in the store and put a bullet in my brain. Paula - David, what do you suggest we play? David - I dont care. Anything. I would rather... I would rather watch Beautician and the Beast. I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothing against him, but if I hear Yah Mo B There one more time, Im going to Yah Mo burn this place to the ground. Paula - Youre such a smartass. Get back on the floor. 3) Andy Stitzer: You know what my problem is? I am not interesting. What am I supposed to say? I went to magic camp? That Im an accomplished ventriloquist? Oh, I *am* the Seventh Degree Imperial Yo-Yo Master. Ooh, do me, Yo-Yo Master, I want you to do me cause youre the yo-yo guy! -Cal, David, Paula and Andy Stitzer (Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, Jane Lynch and Steve Carell in The 40 Year Old Virgin) The fact that it simultaneously announced Judd Apatow as a serious cinematic force to be reckoned with and Steve Carell as a real deal movie star would be enough to cement the reputation of The 40 Year Old Virgin. But its also sweet, smart and hysterically funny, perfectly juggling innocence and raunch in a combination that never crosses the line into too nasty or too sappy. With a cast chock full of comedy MVPs (Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Jane Lynch, Leslie Mann, Elizabeth Banks, Kat Dennings, Jonah Hill, David Koechner, Kevin Hart) and the inspired choice of Catherine Keener as Carells love interest, this movie remains a breath of fresh air in the increasingly snarky R-rated comedy world. Did you know? For Andy to get rid of the Teen Wolf look, actor Steve Carrells chest hair is really waxed by an actress, who is a non-professional waxer. Because there would only be one take of this disturbingly amusing scene, they set up five cameras - one on his friends, one over Andy, one on the waxer, one for wide shots, and one for close-ups of his chest. This scene was not scripted, so when the waxer laughs and Andys friends are totally cracking up it was for real. Though it was strongly suggested to Steve to first trim his chest hair or to take a pain reliever before the taping, he refused, wanting to have the full cringe-effect caught on tape. In one close-up a bit of blood is actually seen bleeding up to the surface - it is not CGI. It took about seven weeks for his hair to grow back, much to chagrin of his wife, who wasnt crazy about his chest smiley. The woman teaching the class at the clinic is Steve Carells real wife. The entire You Know How I Know Youre Gay scene was improvised by Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen. According to Seth Rogen, Steve Carell was so nervous that the film would be shut down by the studio, he had the writers prepare a back-up version of the script that didnt contain a single word of profanity. In a magazine interview, director Judd Apatow revealed a trick behind the films success: during the first preview of the movie, he had actually recorded the preview audiences vocal reaction with a tape recorder. When it came to re-cutting the film for the general release, he trimmed the film in sync to the recorded reaction. The scenes that did not have audience reaction were either cut or trimmed (but reinserted in the Unrated edition). Steve Carell was actually 43 years old and a father of two children when the movie was released in 2005. Steve Carells wife Nancy Carell (Walls) suggested Jane Lynch for the role of Paula, who also worked with Carell during their Second City days. Before Walls suggested Lynch for the role, it was written to be played by a man, and the character did not come on to Andy until Lynch had been cast and the actors came up with that scene (with her singing the beautiful old Guatemalan love song to Andy) during rehearsals. The beautiful old Guatemalan love song sung by Javier to Paula translates to: When I clean my room / I cant find anything / Where are you going in such a hurry/ To the soccer game. Jane Lynch has told several interviewers that these lyrics were really a practice dialogue that she remembered from a high school Spanish class. The We Sell Your Stuff on eBay store was a real store; it was written into the script after the location was chosen. Actress Elizabeth Banks, who plays Beth, was commuting back and forth between L.A. and Vancouver, since at the time she was shooting this movie she was also in Canada working on Slither. Judd Apatow had a part written for Jason Segel with the character named Jason, but Apatow couldnt get the studio to approve his casting. Apatow advised Segel because of his unique brand of humor, to consider writing material for himself. Thus Segel wrote Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which Apatow served as one of the producers. Andy, David, Cal and Jay are believed to be in the same age group. However, Seth Rogen (Cal) was only 22 years old at the time of filming while Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Romany Malco were in their mid-30s to 40s. Judd Apatows daughter came up with the idea of having the drunken Nicky (played by Apatows wife Leslie Mann) fall asleep while driving Andy to her place and bouncing off of parked cars. When Catherine Keener was cast, Steve Carell told Judd Apatow that her casting had legitimized the films credibility.
