RANT: I quite honestly find it absolutely exhausting and baffling when people say fashion isnt art. Why? Fashion serves as a social, aesthetic, and/or ideological function...much like the art pieces you will find at museums. Perhaps, even take into consideration the historical situation, symbolic context, and institutional framework wherein a design was created and necessarily contributes to how the meaning of the work is constructed? For instance, Yves Saint Laurent created a collection called Le Smoking in 1966 in which women could wear reinterpreted men tuxedo jackets and trousers giving off an androgynous look. Le Smoking was initially met with resistance and then materialized as the bold, sophisticated choice for the liberated woman and has become a wardrobe staple for most women today. Laurent also became the first living fashion designer to be honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a solo exhibition. Elsa Schiaparelli was a fashion designer who did several collaborations with Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, Vertes etc and created notorious surrealist fashions such as the Shoe Hat and the Tear Dress. Diana Vreeland (former special consultant for the Costume Institute of the Met and Fashion Editor for Harpers Bazaar and Vogue) created an entire issue in Vogue inspired by The Tale of Genji which is universally recognized as the greatest masterpiece of Japanese prose narrative and perhaps the earliest true novel in the history of the world. These are just a few examples in which I think style/fashion is an art form. Personally if youre going to say fashion is an inadequate form of art then perhaps youre lacking sagacity or the ability to see it in its complexity??
