RAP music seems to be taking prominence in Bulawayo, with more artistes coming up to the scene and showcasing their talent. An up and coming group, Building Your Origins (BYO), is set to release their album this week that will feature 15 tracks, most of them having a bearing on the City of Kings. The album is being promoted by Khura Arts, a local music producer in Bulawayo. In an interview with Sunday Leisure, the manager of the group, Thuthukani Ndlovu, who is also the grandson of veteran educationist and politician, Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, said the album would be available to the public by the first week of August and the group was set to perform at a concert that is being organised by Face the Music Records. He said the group had worked with various DJs, including Persie, Face, P2daoh and Klasic, some of whom are household names in the South African rap industry. “The album is set to premiere in August, and we have worked with DJs that are from as far as South Africa. We are also hoping to perform at a show that will be hosted in August, so as to showcase some of our songs. The album will be titled Building Blocks. The venue for the stage performance is yet to be advised,” he said. Thuthukani said he also got inspiration from his uncle Dumisani Ndlovu also known as “Dumi Right” who is based in the United States and is a known hip hop artiste. “My uncle is the founder of Zimbabwe Legit, a recording label that is based in the USA. Music seems to run in the family, and we express ourselves through music.” Ndlovu said he would emulate his grandfather by attaining a high level of education, and although music and school do not go hand in hand, most of the members of his group are school going and some are still in high school. “I am currently taking a gap year; although I am going back to school next to pursue a degree in marketing. I would like to emulate my grandfather who has attained a high level of education. One of my members who I rap with, Peter Adam, who we call Tipa, is studying for a degree in History at Midlands State University. The other two, Thabo Moyo and Khaya Sajama are still in high school,” he said. The group hopes to bring about originality within the rap circles, and the members are also staunch Christians who have, to some extent, managed to break into the rap industry that is viewed with pessimism in society because of its overtones in vulgar language.
