RE: CRUSADE FOR SUPPORTING THE EDUCATION OF THE GIRL CHILD Mengo Youth Development Link (MYDEL) is a non government organization based in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda which started as a Community Based Organization (CBO) and later registered as a Non Governmental Organization in 2004 with Registration Number S. 914/5142. It was founded in 2001 as a slum youth initiative under the patronage of Mr. Pascal Lutaya, starting as a community based organization (CBO). In collaboration with the local population and local leaders, MYDEL became aware of other community challenges, which included a high rate of HIV/AIDS infections, drug abuse, prostitution, child abuse, domestic violence and the marginalization of people with disabilities. MYDEL decided to focus their programs on the most vulnerable children and youths from the slum community, most of whom being school dropouts and orphans. MYDEL’s mission is the empowerment of the target group through education, sensitization and skills development to contribute to a sustainable poverty reduction among these marginalized communities. In September 2013, MYDEL was selected among the 20 organizations to host the girls’ education challenge a program aimed at improving the life chances of marginalized girls in greater Kampala Uganda. It is a program whereby girls between the age of 9-17 learn numeracy, literacy and livelihood skills at the creative learning centre for a period of 3-6 months in preparation for them to go back to be re integrated into mainstream schools education. Every intake has to be with 20 girls and at the end of the term they are all supposed to go back to school except those who need more 3 months according to the advice of the teachers. The first intake of November to February 4 were re integrated into mainstream education while other 2 failed because they are supposed to be in S.2 and S.3 and the parents/ guardians are unable to pay school fees given the fact that secondary education is expensive and in the area there are only privately owned secondary school and in the program we are supposed to re- integrate 601 girl back to school in the period of three years. It is upon this, that we kindly request any well wisher who puts the education of vulnerable girls at the fore front to sponsor the vulnerable girls at the creative learning centre so that they can also complete a certain education cycle. If you wish to sponsor a girl the fee for in our area primary pupils pay between shillings 30,000-57,000 while the secondary students pay between shillings 190,000-250,000 per term.
